Grand Sale???

I eagerly waited for the weekend to check out the Grand Sale of Brunei which is currently on-going. The first stop was a departmental store in Jalan Tutong which we frequented as they have some cool men's wear. Upon arrival, the selection did not failed us. There were lots of nice polo shirts with very good material and darn cheap. Who can complain with polo shirts going at $6.40 and $9.90!!! I manage to try out a few in the tiny cubicle and sorted out the ones that did not make me look like a pumpkin. While trying out a few of them, Bahrin pulled out a shirt that was marked with gold wordings - "House of Glamourous People". I told myself, I must have that whether it fits me or not!!! That was such a cool shirt to have.... and to top it off, it was only $16.90!!!

So, while Bahrin was trying out his selection, me with my ichy fingers decided to peel of the price tag as it was stuck on to the previous price. I wanted to see how much the original cost was, so that I can brag that I bought it for $49.90 or something like that, as the shirt looks really expensive. I was in complete shock when I saw how much the shirt actually cost and stood there frozen!!! With a big Sale sign hanging just right below me, this turqouise shirt with gold lettering screaming out at me to buy it, cost $14.90!!!

I felt so cheated and appalled at such a reputable store. Ok, so it was cheap anyway. But at least have the decency to peel off the old price tag and just paste the new price tag for goodness sake!!! I even went up to the sales lady and all she could say was, "Wrong pricing". Wrong pricing on every single shirt that has $14.90 price tag covered with $16.90 on top of it???? Do I have the word "Stupid" written on my forehead??? Please!! Give me some credit!!!

So, for everyone's sake, "let your fingers do all the peeling" especially when those lazy b@#t*?ds are to lazy to take off the old tags and paste the so-called Sale Price on every items in their store!!!

Weddings....ahhh...... a function I dread to go....

Its always the same.... If you are single, the same broken record will be playing.... "When is it you turn".... or, from the old folks... a more direct question of, "You know I don't have long to live.... when are you tying the knot...". And it doesn't end just there... even after you have gotten married, the next question that pops out is... "So, when are we expecting an addition to the family?" or, again from the old folks... "Got problem ah?? Why no children yet???".... what a laugh...

Still, its a obligation for us as an adult to celebrate the happy occasion be it friends or family.... but I must say, I do enjoy the celebration. Its a time to meet up with old friends and in my case, my colleagues...with the recent juicy gossips or rather.. updates...

This year alone, I have attend quite a few weddings of mostly friends and I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all!!! The latest being Aida's wedding.... I am so happy for all of you and you can also tell how happy they are in these photos!!!

I have....!!! Yes people, I am back!! The financial exam was a real toughy and I am not sure whether I made it to the passing mark or not. It has been known that on average, a person sitting for this exam will need to do it twice!!! Well....all I can do now is wait and see. If I don't do well or even pass, I am sure I will be very gutted and possibly be in tears... sob...

But anyhew.... could it be a sign for me?? Or does it carry any meaning?? The same day after the exam I saw the end of a rainbow... and I manage to get a snap shot of it... kinda faint but if you look close enough, you might see it!! Yes, the rainbow ends at Batu Satu, Jalan Tutong... hehe....

I am currently in the midst of slogging away for a really big exam in June. I apologise for not taking the time at the moment to update my blog, but am hoping that after the exam, I will take time out from my crazy schedule to have a breather outside Brunei....

So, for the time being..... adios amigos till sometime in July... but who knows.. if I do have that little precious time for me to "breathe".. I will do some updating too....

Recently, a new Malay thriller/suspense movie was showing and with all the hype of how scary it was, I decided that I will pluck my courage to watch it... Jangan Pandang Belakang... How scary was it.... well... half the time I had my eyes closed and at one point, I even had to cover my ears!!! The background music was scarier than the movie itself!!!

Going through my photo album on Maya's birthday.... I had a giggle thinking of the phrase, "Jangan Pandang Belakang" (Don't Look Back) as you can see below... Enjoy!!!

But, if they come up with a new movie for this, it should be called, "What the Hell is He wearing??!!"...

I suppose I don't have to report about my change of character in Maya's birthday as it would all have been reported by Bandar 360 (By the way, again Happy Birthday to Maya, and also... I didnt forget... only late... Happy Belated Birthday to my "mentor" Mardi all the way in London) So, let me go a tangent to something pretty!!!

It has been a long journey for Sharon & Jefri.... and with the arrival of their new bundle of joy, Baby Zara... lets rewind abit on the preparation and the anticipation.....

The Preparation

Rosie and myself for weeks have been rounding up friends who wanted to contribute in showing our love to Sharon & Jefri for the arrival of Zara.... and with overwhelming response... we manage to get a gorgeous baby crib, comforter with baby pillow & bolster, breast pump and a whole lot of baby equipment including a glow-in-the-dark pacifier!!!

Contributors to these wonderful gifts are:

Amal, Bahrin, Barry, Gerry, Hui Ling, Jasmine, Mawar, Mei Lan, Nancy, Pipi, Pris, Rosie, Suffian, Sujee, Wuei and Yazid.

Baby Zara

At around 10.50pm, 16 March 2007, our dear Sharon gave birth to Baby Zara. It wasnt an easy birth as Baby Zara was due on the 14 March. After inducment on the 15 March night, Sharon wasnt dilated enough. Her water broke (also inducement) at around 10.30am but around 9.30pm (almost 11 hours later!!!), the doctor said that they had no choice but to do a C-Section on her. It was a quick operation and lasted for less then 30mins.

Mummy Sharon is so exhausted and could not stay awake after the surgery which by the way was on local!!! Yes, she was awake throughout the whole surgery.

Congratulations to the new Papa Jefri and Mama Sharon!!!!

Even I myself can't remember when was the last time I blogged on.... my apologies....

The pressure is on for me at work but I am sure with persistence, hard work and a really thick skin, I can persevere and possibly up the performance!!!

Apart from that, work and no play makes Jack a dull boy... so, this is what I have been up to at Rosie's birthday party theme.... Red Carpet... in line with the oscars....

As usual I was really stressed out deciding what I should be coming as... I know that most of them will be glamorously dolled up.. but me being me... This is what I came up with...

Round the World Visitors!!

I have been so caught up with work and training and other personal matters that I havent had the time to sit down and update my blog especially for my relatives around the globe. Recently, sometime in the beginning of February, Winnie Ee and Uncle Theo from the Netherlands were on their "world tour" and had a stop over in Brunei before heading to Brisbane to see Agnes Ee and Uncle Dave. They were very happy to see the new addition to the Sim Family, Sophia Yasmin.

And for 5 days now, we have cousin Veronica and her boyfriend, Terry visiting us all the way from Edmonton, Canada. The good thing about Brunei is that there is not much places to go to, we all end up catching up on the latest movie and tv series like Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, Desperate Housewives and so on.... But of course, the best part is we feed them good!!! Dunno how much more Terry can handle the food here.. hehe...

Retina Detachment

Today, after work, I accompanied BBear to the eye clinic. He complained 2 days back that he had difficulty seeing, something like, someone had drawn a black marker at the bottom half of his left eye. The doctor, after proding his eye balls several hours later said that his retina has fallen off!!! This symptom is known as Retinal Detachment. It was the first time that I have heard of anything like this.... imagine losing your retina just like that!!!

After much research, I manage to find out more about this....

"Retinal detachment is a disorder of the eye in which the retina peels away from its underlying layer of support tissue. Initial detachment may be localized, but without rapid treatment the entire retina may detach, leading to vision loss and blindness. It is a medical emergency. [1]
The retina is a thin disc-shaped layer of light-sensitive tissue on the back wall of the eye. Its job is to translate what we see into neural impulses and send them to the brain via the optic nerve. Occasionally, injury or trauma to the eye or head may cause a small tear in the retina, which allows fluid to seep through, and peel it away like a bubble in wallpaper"

What really shocked me was the operations that followed. Under local anaesthetic, yes local, his eye ball were injected three times to numb the pain that was to follow. Imagine having someone inject your eye whilst you are wide awake.....!!!!! Ewww....

Last weekend, we had our annual dinner with the theme, Superstar. It took me a while to decide what I should come as. At first I though.. hmmm..... why not, Jesus Superstar. But then again, it might open up more eyes than I would like... someone new to the institution and wearing a loin cloth to a formal function. That would be a laugh.
So in the end, I decided, since I still have my brother's costume... i.e. the Elvis look, I might as well go all out in it...

I am so sorry I had to missed the birthday party as of all days, I had to work late today and missed the fun.....

After several trials and errors, we manage to perfect the art of making Kuih Pie Tee, a traditional nyonya snack which we have been craving for ever since we had a few in Singapore. I had always thought that Pie Tee was one of my favourite nyonya snack as it was simple and kinda healthy with lots of vege inside a deep fried cup. What I didnt realise was how easy it was to make.... that is of course after several wasted attempts. After researching through the internet with various recipes on how to make it..... Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Brunei's version....!!!

And yes people, its as yummy as it looks!!!
So, do i have any orders???

Sharing Husband..... The Movie

I have not seen that many Indonesia movies, but today I pay my respect to one particular movie called "Berbagi Suami" which literally means "Sharing Husband". It has made its mark globally in various international movie awards. And what is the jest of this movie you may ask?? Well, its about polygamy which is widespread in Indonesia. The producer of this very clever movie links the emotions of women who succumb to such phenomenon. I was particularly impress with the way the story falls into place and how life perceives itself. You would not even have felt that this was a two and a half hours show.... and like two other malay movies that I have also enjoyed just as much, Sepet and Gubra (Sepet 2), a Malaysian production, I salute the movie producers of South East Asia for their quality and excellent movie making!!!!

And what caught my attention from this movie was the soundtrack which I first heard in MTV Jus one Sunday morning. A band that you would never would have expected to be a really cool Indonesia group called, White Shoes and Couples Company. I love their style (ala 60s/70s) and their songs. I am still looking for their album and for those in Indonesia reading this, send me the Album!!!!

Introducing....Sophia Yasmin Sim......

Here we have it, little baby Sophia, still so tiny and still so wrinkly... What I was amaze with was the amount of hair on her head!!! Look!!! Of course it has to be her mother's genes..... with that amount of hair... haha...

She was so delicate..... If I am not mistaken, Sophia was born the same time as Jared (her older brother, 34 weeks), and weighs the same as Daniel (her 3rd brother, not sure about the weight) and probably with the looks of Ryan (her 2nd brother).

What I was shock with was the attitudes of the nurses at RIPAS hospital (should we be surprise??). Naz was rush to labour on a wheelchair... well, rush is not the word to use as they were strolling to the ward. Her water had already broke and Naz told the nurse that the baby was about to come out. The nurses did not believe... Please note that the time was 9.45pm and the nurses were "ready" to change shift at 10pm. It was quite obvious that the nurses her more than ready to go home instead of taking up nurses duty of delivering babies. If they were given the chance, I am sure they would like to push the baby back into the womb until the next duty nurse comes in!!!!

Anyway, on the wheelchair Naz actually could feel baby Sophia's head coming out and insisted that the nurse had a look under her gown. So, casually and with much reluctance, they did, and to their surprise, yes, little Sohia's head was already popping out!!!

Only then did they rush to the labour room. Naz was so afraid that Sophia would just pop out while on the wheelchair, but luckily, Sophia was born safety on the labour bed, no thanks to the nurses... who still was waiting for the next duty nurses to take over with the cleaning up of Sophia!!!!

Congratulations to my brother, Jefri and my sister-in-law, Naz, for another addition to the family. While having a little gossip session with Rosie at Coffee Bean, I received a message from my mum that at 9.53pm today, 16 January 2007, Naz gave birthday to a bouncy baby girl !!!

Her name.......Sophia Yasmin Sim. I have a niece!!!! I have not seen her yet, but I will in the morning... Check out my blog tomorrow on the new addition to the Sim Family.....

Buang Buring... (Throwing Boredom)

Its not easy trying to entertain oneself whilst on a break in Brunei. All we do is either eat or sleep. Its not too bad for a couple of days but imagine if its for weeks on end and leaving the country is not an option, there is only so much you can do. There is a limited places to hangout, and its usually the same ole place to the point that even the waitress/waiter not only knows you name, but also you age, where you live, where you work and so on.

Last night, we decided to play around with my camera and tried taking pictures of one of the most beautiful landmarks in Brunei, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddein Mosque. It didn't turn out half as bad, but I am sure with more practice, I can do some more interesting shots....

Apart from that, there were a few interesting sites that I found and one that was introduce by my friend.

The first is my virtual pet that I have adopted, its right at the bottom of this blog. Meet Pringles the Panda. If you click on "more", you will be given bamboo leaves to feed him.

The second is the one that you see at the top of my blog, "What is your Porn Star Name?". Bahrin found this site while browsing Adflin Shauki's website!! My Porn Star name so happened to be "Dick Cocks"!!! Let me know what yours are in my chatterboxs. Should be a laugh. I suppose I could change it every week just to get the momentum going. There's even one for Drag Queen Name Generator and your 80s Theme Song.... So this is what we do when we are bored in Brunei.... hehe...

On my day off today, I decided that after I finished paying all my bills, I would have a nice slow drive to another district, the Belait District. And since Bahrin is on leave, why not. It has been a while since I visited Seria and Kuala Belait and a very long time for Bahrin, probably a few years, not counting passing by those towns on the way to Miri!!!

I celebrated my birthday three times last week... One was a birthday surprise organised by Bahrin. Thanks to him for getting all our friends together and manage to cover-up all event even with me being very inquisitive. The second one was organised by my colleagues at work. Thanks to the Managers Lily and Joe. And the third one was organised by my family which was fused together with my Dad as his birthday fell on new years' day.

?It has been a quiet Christmas compared to last year when my family and I celebrated Christmas in Singapore, which was followed by much partying with friends, also in Singapore.... But what was more important was that I celebrated it with the most important people in my life, my family and friends, although some of my friends are away overseas... I do apologise for my absence in updating my blog. With my recent venturing into the banking line, it has somewhat surprised me. Although this is only a part-time job as a Customer Service Adviser (CSA), I am beginning to grow into it. The staff has made me so welcomed, that, although it has been overwhelming, trying to learn everything from scratch, their friendliness made things easier and for me to blend in to a whole new environment.

But for this moment in time, I would like to wish all the December babies a very happy birthday with many many more to come. I hope I have not left out anyone in particular, and if I did, I am so sorry..... blame it on my age!!!

For the past 10 years of my life, I sold my life to a school. It has been an interesting experience and I tresure all the friendships I have made throughout my years in this school. Friendship especially with my students who had made my life a roller-coaster ride. Teachers who makes my life colorful both in school and outside school.
The next few weeks, there will be lots of dinners and functions.... and I will post it out soon when I have the time...

A Year Older....

They say age is just a number... but it sure is creeping up on us!!! Whether we like it or not, each year we add on a year, and scarily a kilo too!! BB was just telling me that the pants we bought beginning of this year can't be worn anymore. Even our conversation are now slowly morphing into a different level. It starts from:

games & toys to
family vacation to
boyfriends & girlfriends to
parties to jobs & colleagues to
blood pressures & cholesterol level and
God knows what after that.

It's scary but such is life. No sense in regret as like one says, no point crying over spilled milk. We learn to adopt to our surroundings and we learn to take risk. As we embark on our journey called life, each year will be slightly different and we give a toast to each and everyone who already have added another candle to their "low-fat" cakes and also to those who will be adding one more candle soon, including yours truly. Back to Our Roots

How much do we know about our roots? How far back can we remember of our ancestors? Can we remember what they wore during those times back in the 40s? 50s? 60s? That was the dilemma we had when Sujee & Meilan decided to have the party on this theme. At the end, with some imagination and a whole lot of rummaging into our closet, it turn out to be an interesting party with lots of Japanese-style photography... photo here...photo there...

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, someone, whose name I shall not mention, but bought her car only few weeks ago, decided to ram her car up a shoulder and caused a heartbreaking dent at the side!!! I wonder who this person is......

I have been told that my eyes are bigger than my stomach... well... I suppose that goes for the rest of my friends and the whole of Brunei too... It seems that at every meeting, even for just half an hour, a whole array of scrumptous food awaits us and we eagerly look forward to it.... though secretly....

This year alone, I have attended one too many functions and all with food at the end. Some of which are pleasing to the eye with an interesting "localised" taste to it. For example, the one on the left is called "Panna Cotta Cempedak" topped with Raspberry, Cranberry and Strawberry, a summer-ish dessert.

Main courses are something to be reckon with. Like the follow picture on the right, "Tandoori Masala Burung Puyuh", aka Tandoori Masala Quail... yum..yum...

Then there are the chinese dishes which piles you up like there is no tomorrow. Those who have never been to a chinese wedding before are in for a surprise. Be warned that the first dish that comes your way is not the end!! Its just the beginning followed by 7 more dishes after that!! So don't pack it all in on the first dish!!

To end, I present to you my favourite dish of all time.... Yam in the Basket and I could not care less what is inside, be it seafood, buttermilk chicken or prawns, or whatever... I'll eat the fried yam alone....

Childhood Memories

How far back can we remember of our childhood days? Somehow or rather, trying to remember where I put my car keys or wallet few minutes ago poses a challenge whereas reminiscing on my yesteryears is not a problem at all. I guess at our younger age, stress was just a word and nothing more. As we get older, we cling onto our memories of the times when the air was clear, the memories were fonder, lifestyle were simpler and tv channels were 3 the most!!!

Wedding Bliss

So far this year, I have attended 3 weddings already and to each its own. First wedding was an inter-racial one with its first few ceremonies in Brunei then Singapore. One of my very best friend finally got married and it was a beautiful wedding... from a more family oriented banquet at Hua Ho Mall in Jalan Muara to a more casual, relaxed get-together at the Pantai, Empire Hotel & Country Club, followed by a grand traditional Malay wedding at the Malay Village in Singapore.

Few months after that at the end of September my sister got married. This drove me almost to the brink of insanity!! Mainly due to assumptions on what everyone was doing which infact no one knew of it!! Only after a group meeting with those concerned, it kick started and more or less, the rest was history. Everything went fairly well with a slight hiccup from the father of the bride as he was feeling abit under the weather. Overall, a beautiful wedding and one to remember....

Few days ago, another wedding. This time, an old and dear friend of mine whom I have known since childhood. We practically grew up together, went to the same school, and had our fair share of drama... "the brick to the ear"!!! Now a married woman, I am so happy for her..

First it was Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. Now its Britney Spears and Kevin Federline who are now divorcing. Ok Ok... I admit that I am a Britney buff... Whatever anyone says, I still think Britney is my kind of gurl!! She has wat it takes to be a star. Her songs are totally cool... and those shrugging away.. don't pretend that you don't know at least two of her hits!! And her videos.... all I can say is... if my karma allows me to be reborn again... I will be the next Britney!! And I am sure my "friends" can vouch for me... wink...wink...

Celebration

It comes once a year. Some look forward to it whist other dread the day of bingeing and last minute decoration. No matter how prepared you are, there will be just that one little section that has been left out. Be it the green packets, touch up on painting, undecided arrangement of the furniture or whether there is enough food.
Even the open house concept has been misconstrued. It use to be a pleasure to invite family, friends and acquaintances to the house. But now, it seems more like a chore to get enough food and drinks, jazzing up the house or apartment, cleaning and clearing the endless collection of paraphernalia. Instead of invitation, we get questioned on when should friends come to the house...
After all the chaos of ordering or cooking or baking numerous delectable delicacies and a make over of the house (which infact was the fairy lights that made the difference), the sense of achievement is so gratifying. Friends and family come in, filling the house with laughter and excitement. The latest gossips on who's marrying who, who's going out with who and who dumped who are the highest priority on the gossip agenda.
So, in the hoo-ha of the celebration, at the end of the day, we carry with us the treasure of friends and families and it seems worth all the effort..

Close Call

Yesterday on my way home from work, I decided to top up my fuel tank. It rained heavily earlier in the day and continued to drizzle till then. A car was infront of me and was driving at a moderate speed of about 75km/hr. Since the road was slippery, I decided to just tag along behind. Nearing the fuel station, we had to go through a traffic light. It was green and this car infront of me decided to slow down.... And I was wondering what this driver was trying to do. I could not overtake as cars were zooming at the fast lane typically trying to avoid the amber light.

All of a sudden, the driver in the front halted completely as soon as the amber light came on!!! What the @?#%??? I immediately stepped on my brakes and had to swerved my car to the side to avoid ramming into the back.

Only then did I get a good view of the driver!! Woman!!!! I then realise what she was doing. She slowed down waiting for the amber lights!!!Not that I am against woman drivers, but why is it that everytime I get funny drivers, its woman!!

The other day, it was at the airport. The first two cars infront were women and I found it amusing how they try to feed the ticket into the machine. The first car over-shot the machine and after much discussion, told the back passenger to slot in the ticket... after 10 mins!!! The second car... again another woman. She got her car at the correct position but decided NOT take out her shade. So instead opened her car door. The only problem with that was, she parked too closed to the machine and could not open the door fully. I was almost on the floor with tears in my eyes when I saw what she did. She got her little son out of the car to slot in the ticket!!!

Lord!!! I raise my case!!
